“The high quality workmanship and ability to deliver outstanding projects for their clients for great value for money has been recognised by the Master Builders National Excellence in Building & Construction Awards,” Wilhelm Harnisch CEO of Master Builders Australia said.

National Excellence in Workplace Health and Safety Award:
Winner: Hansen Yuncken, Cat & Fiddle Arcade, Hobart

Hansen Yuncken achieved outstanding safety outcomes in the construction of Hobart’s Cat & Fiddle Arcade. This was achieved through implementation of a range of range of measures to foster increased worker participation in the HIRAC process. From the introduction of practical IT solutions for hazard reporting and management, to injury prevention trials and creative signage, it is clear Hansen Yuncken are driving excellence in safety outcomes on this project.

These efforts are supplemented by a strong focus on empowering employees and contractors through training and the provision of information, Hansen Yuncken have developed innovative controls and work methods on the Cat & Fiddle Arcade project to manage its unique and challenging risk profile.

Cbus Medium National Medium Density Award: 2 to 5 dwellings
Winner: Lyden Builders

Lyden Builders developed two townhouses that are different in appearance, yet complement each other in their individuality.

The front townhouse has a spacious layout positioned to capture stunning views over the Derwent River with large floor-to-ceiling windows in the front of the main living area. At the rear of the block the second building is just as impressive in its simplicity and style. From spacious, open plan living to an expansive master suite, both homes are designed to exceed expectations. Both have double garages and striking but easily maintained landscaping with exposed aggregate driveways.

National Commercial/Industrial Construction Award – under $5 million
Winner: Fairbrother Pty Ltd, Tasmania – St Patrick’s College

The project involved the construction of a new two storey teaching centre. The upper level comprises six individual class teaching spaces linked by glazed acoustic operable walls specifically designed to open into a single space. A key challenge involved working within the confines of a fully operational school campus. Site security and safety including traffic management were a priority particularly around school start and finish times. A high level of skill was required to frame the architecturally designed raking and angled external walls.

National Commercial/Industrail Construction Award - $10m to $20m
Winner:  Vos Construction and Joinery Pty Ltd - Devonport Aquatic Centre (SPLASH)

The Devonport Indoor Aquatic Centre named SPLASH by the public consists of a new eight-lane indoor 25 metre pool a learn to swim warm water exercise pool and leisure water centre with water play features.  A fitness gym and programme room, café, additional multi-purpose/meeting room and an outdoor play splash area as well as change rooms, storage and first aid centre complete the project.

The main pool hall is supported on 16 large pre-cast columns with steel framed curved triangular trusses spanning 26 metres between the columns.  Because of their odd shape and size they had to be manufactured on site and weighed in excess of 25 tonnes. A Ritek Insulated Roof Panel system was used over the curved roof to the Main Pool Hall.

The project was engineered for 187 CFA bored piles 450 dia and 600 dia to be installed as the base for the structure. Some piles were bored up to 18 metres deep

Majority of the concrete floors were suspended over the piles and linked with thickened concrete beams.

National Commercial/Industrial Construction Award - $50m to $100m
Winner: Joint Venture – John Holland & Fairbrother Pty Ltd
Project: Medical Sciences 2 (MS2) Hobart

Commencing with the demolition of the pre-existing warehouses, the new building comprises seven levels including a car park, a teaching floor, office accommodation, a biomedical research facility and an animal and plant level totalling 9,250 square metres of floor space.

The most striking feature is the façade. A concrete lattice shading frame across the building with a contour form provides secondary sun shading based on Hobart's topography. Mountain peaks and water formations have been mapped using a combination of steel and colour glazing.
