Master Builders Survey Confirms Industry Set to Keep Improving

Statement by Mr Michael Keschbaum - Executive Director

The release of the Master Builders National Survey for the December 2015 quarter confirms that the Tasmanian building and construction sector is expected to experience another positive year in 2016, the peak employer body representing the building and construction industry.

Mr Kerschbaum, MBT’s Executive Director said, “The recent Tasmanian survey results show that the state’s building and construction is expecting a good year with confidence and lead indicators very strong in both the residential and non-residential sectors. Tasmanian results were consistently higher than the national average with regard to almost all indicators. Interestingly, the expected labour shortages have not yet occurred with builders reporting that it is still relatively easy to find labour. MBT expects these figures to turn around by the end of the year with major labour shortages expected across the Board.”

Mr Kerschbaum continued, “The survey results confirm that the building and construction industry will generate jobs for the Tasmanian economy over the course of the year with builders responding that their current capacity will not be adequate to cope with the upcoming workload. Non-residential builders were especially positive about where overall conditions are headed.”

Mr Kerschbaum added, “The key issues facing our industry are how to meet the labour demand and how to contain costs so that building doesn’t become unaffordable. These are issues that MBT is working through with its members at the moment, but it won’t be an easy thing to address in the short-term”, Mr Kerschbaum concluded.”
