MBT Top 10 Election Priorities 2018
14 February 2018
Master Builders Tasmania is calling for the state's political leaders to adopt its Top 10 policies for a stronger economy and community
Executive Director of MBT Michael Kerschbaum said the Top 10 for Tasmania policy agenda outlined the measures to ensure the building and construction industry could continue to build prosperity and create jobs in communities across the state.
"There is no doubt that both the economy and the business conditions experienced by the state’s builders have improved substantially over the past few years. Our industry has been one of the key drivers of that improved performance,” Michael Kerschbaum said.
“This State Election on 3 March is a vital one for the building and construction industry, economy and community. We need the right policies, set out in Master Builders Top 10 for Tasmania, to ensure that we build on the hard fought economic growth of the last few years and are able to consolidate the improvement in the wellbeing of Tasmanians.”
“The real bright spot has been the outperformance of the housing sector. While house prices in most parts of Australia began to decline towards the end of last year, the average growth for housing in Hobart was 13.8% over the year to September 2017 – the strongest amongst the state capital cities. Combined with better wages, Hobart homeowners are experiencing one of the biggest boosts to their wealth for some years.”
“The value of work done in new housing construction is expected to increase by 3.8% to $657million in 2017-18 and continue to grow for the next few years if the State Government policy settings are kept on track,”
“Examples of good policy are the Cities Deals signed by Tasmanian and Federal Government’s in both the north and south of the state. These promise to open up more supply of new housing helping to keep homeownership within reach of average Tasmanians. Labor’s promise to re-zone the future light rail corridor is also in line with MBT’s key election priority, which is to develop a Northern Suburbs Growth Corridor for Hobart,” Mr Kerschbaum concluded.
