City Deal could shape Hobart's Long Term Future

Master Builders Tasmania comments on the announcement of a City Deal for Hobart as a great step forward

Mr Michael Kerschbaum, Executive Director of MBT stated, “Today’s announcement that a City Deal has been signed for Hobart is a great step forward for the city.  MBT’s believes that its vision for a Northern Suburbs Growth Corridor should be seriously considered as part of that deal.  The City Deal will obviously incorporate key components such as the development of University and public transport infrastructure, but the potential game changers will be the acceleration of the Macquarie Point project and the potential to re-develop the Northern Suburbs as part of a broader urban renewal project.”

Mr Kerschbaum added, “Master Builders expects Hobart’s population growth to continue to accelerate.  Without a clear plan to accommodate those extra people and meet their demands, the city will eventually choke.  Mixed use developments incorporating medium density housing, better services and  transport is the answer.  MBT urges all politicians to consider a holistic approach to Hobart’s future, one that integrates everything that a modern and thriving city needs.”

Mr Kerschbaum concluded, “The City Deal appears to hold great promise for the future of the Macquarie Point redevelopment, with the potential to activate the site earlier than anticipated.”
