Our History

The success of any organisation is measured in part by its achievements. MBT’s 110 plus years history has seen many milestones and highlights including:

• The Builders´ and Contractors´ Association of Tasmania was formed in 1891 "to provide a solid working body for the purpose of protecting its members in the fair and proper execution of such works as they may from time to time contract to execute for their mutual protections and benefit".

• Expansion of Hobart office to cover North-West regions in 1961 and in 1975 covering the Northern region.

• May 1966 - Establishment of the Annual Building Trades Apprenticeship Awards which continues today and is regarded as one of the state’s premier apprenticeship awards.

• October 1979 - Development of the MBT Group Apprenticeship Scheme. This was then taken over by the Tasmanian Building and Constructions Industry Training Board (TBCITB) in 1984.

• June 1991 - Construction of an Education Centre aimed at developing knowledge of botany and timber at the Tasmanian Arboretum at Eugenana on Tasmania’s North-West coast. The centre was wholly constructed on a voluntary basis with labour and materials supplied by MBT members.

• 1993 founded the introduction of the MBT Awards for Excellence program which has grown to become recognised as one of the most prestigious in the Tasmanian building and construction industry. The event is one of the most successful industry dinners of its type. It facilitates the opportunity to recognise outstanding achievement in building and construction of individuals and organisations, together with high class entertainment provided by quality guest artists and fellowship of like minded people.
